Simple pleasures of life......

Kang Kong (sounds like King Kong, doesn´t it?) is easily available at the asian store where I get my weekly groceries. However, I never had the courage to cook it, since the smell of belacan (a spice commonly used in Asia) is pretty pungent and I really didn´t know if my hubby´s western stomach would be able to take it. Finally deciding that I didn´t want to wait til Singapore to eat this dish, I got a recipe online, decreased the amt of chilli and cooked it. I didn´t regret it a single bit. It tasted so heavenly! Best thing too was that my husband enjoyed it immensely too! He did mention that though this dish tasted very good, it switched quite fast to "intolerable" because of the smell. Nevertheless he managed to enjoy his portion of the vegetables and I ate the leftover for lunch the next day.

Belacan Kangkong with dried shrimps, garlic etc.....

Still working on my homemade pesto with salmon. Found out that grilled salmon in the oven tastes superb! The salmon cooks in its own oil and comes out juicy. By adding garlic and shallots into the oven-proof dish, the oil content is decreased too. Its so fun to modify the original recipe - lesser olive oil and cheese, but more basil. Its beginning to acquire a "cooked-by-Pris" taste....that´s the thing I love about cooking, there´s no end to learning!

Imagine my joy when I found this at the asian store! Its this baby snack food which I used to have when I was a kid. Of course they sold it in small packets costing around S$0.20 at that time. Here, its 1.80€ as you can see. The packet is significantly bigger too....its such a treasure that its still sitting on my kitchen table waiting to be eaten.....

Hi Pris

Try squeezing some lemon juice onto your grilled salmon. It'll taste heavenly. Something I tried during my uni days at a potluck dinner birthday party for a friend.

Belachan kangkong is my top fav dish! That is in my top list from you should i come to visit anytime! :-)

FYI, cheese is never added to seafood in true Italian dishes. BUT then if you like the taste of the two combined together, then I guess it's ok :-P

Hey Cyn! Great idea! I will certainly try that the next time I grill salmon! So nice to get cooking ideas from friends!

Hey Cory! You´re a big chilli fan right? Need to warn you hor - my kangkong is like level 0.5 spicyness thanks to my german hubby. I think you would need like a 5+ spicy kang kong right? But sure sure! Come and visit and I´ll cook that for you and stink up my entire apartment. hahah.

Hey anonymous! Hmm, are you dad? Or are you an Italian? I´m pretty sure a true-blooded Italian will probably faint at the type of pasta dishes I cook and what I mix in my pasta...but its fun to mix and match. And since my hubby´s not an Italian, he pretty much enjoys my chinese-german-italian influence hahah....

That looks like a bag of toasted mini-marshmellows... mmmm. The pics of the food are wonderful, though I probably lean more towards your husbands tastes and there are still "Asian" spices that get to me.

Archie - hey that´s such a unique description of the food! hahah....I think they taste quite different compared to toasted marshmallows...you can try them if you find them in any asian store. You´re American right? Yah, some asian smells really stink...I think so too. But I´m more used to it, so it doesn´t bother me that much. heehee

Hi Pris

Don't think its yr dad that commented about cheese in Italian dishes. Firstly, he hasn't been to Italy, secondly, he hardly eats Italian food and can't differentiate the different types of pastas available. Anyway, I have checked with him and he said that it wasn't him. Hee hee.

Dear Grace! That´s what I thought too. I felt that the "italian" comment didn´t sound like dad and true enough it wasn´t him. Thanks for checking for me though! Have a great weekend! I´m going for a wedding tomorrow!

Hey dear Steph! :) So nice to hear from you! Ohhh, you can´t find those baby snack food? I can take a look at the Asian store again, if they have I can buy more and bring to you when I go to visit ok? Thing is this, we can´t visit in Oct- since both of us are teaching (and can´t get leave). November would be too cold already right? So we´re thinking of maybe Spring 2009? We wanted to start planning our travel itinerary as soon as Stephan finished his exams but he had a dental operation straight after that - emergency one. He´s feeling much better now, but as you can see, we still haven´t planned anything. Which months would be good to visit?

May-June time would be nice cos not too crowded yet and sunny already but if you want to swim in sea than July/Aug time is warmer of course. We are heading back to Spore in Feb for sure now so can't wait !

Hey Steph! Oh wow...that´s a pretty long way to go! May-June I mean. That means we´d have plenty of time to plan! Nice nice! Hahha, my friend Belinda just went to Nice recently and its funny how she ended up visiting this place just because she said she wanted to go "somewhere nice" for her birthday.....U must be So excited to go to Singapore! It´d be Leia´s first time there right?
