Horrible Ganesha experience

When I blogged yesterday, I had no idea how much I would need the "peace" from God for myself today. We had a wonderful day with my Dad and his gf going to Neuschwanschein today and wanted to end it off by having good food. The thought of having authentic Indian food crossed my mind and we made a reservation at Ganesha. What a bad idea.

The waiter serving us was one big fat idiot. He started off by having this black face when he first asked us for drinks and since we haven´t decided what to have and Stephan just arrived (he had to park his car), the waiter simply left us again with a hint of irritation on his face.

We then wanted to place our orders and I asked for a Briyani, with a small bowl of curry - which was what one of my friends had before and she even clarified to the waiter at that time that she would have a small bowl of curry sauce in addition, but extra spicy. I remembered, cos I sat beside her and overheard what she said. So, I went ahead to order the same thing, thinking it would be no problem.

Apparently this waiter was like inexperienced or having a bad day or smth, but he kept insisting that Briyani does not come with curry and that we would have to pay extra if we wanted a small bowl of curry. We (Stephan and I) kept trying to explain that our friend had the same order before and it was possible but he kept insisting that there´s no such thing. He said that the dish comes with "sauce" but not "curry". So, finally we said that we were willing to pay extra for a small bowl of curry, with just the gravy and no meat.

When the waiter left, I was really doubtful that our waiter really understood us, cos I kept having the gut feeling that he misunderstood what we said and would end up giving us an extra portion of curry with meat - a full additional meal. It didn´t help that the waiter´s german sucked big time and he didn´t speak any English. I then asked Stephan if we should ask another waiter to clarify that our waiter had placed the right orders. Stephan looked at my irritatingly and insisted that everything shd be ok. As it was, he didn´t want to make a mountain out of a molehill. So, I decided to give the waiter the benefit of the doubt and didn´t pursue the issue any further.

What happened? Our food came with an extra lamb curry. The Briyani came with the curry gravy - which would have been the case even if we didn´t ask for any additional curry. The waiter then insisted that the curry gravy was "not curry" but "sauce". I´m like thinking "what the heck? How would I have known that they don´t call it curry but sauce? It looks exactly like curry and taste like curry sauce! He could have explained it to us!?!?" Naturally, we didn´t want the lamb curry and told him that we didn´t want it. He mumbled angrily that we had ordered it and took it back reluctantly.

My Dad wanted a group photo and asked him to take one for us. The first photo was without flash and turned out a bit dark so my Dad asked for a second photo. The waiter pressed the button but didn´t bother to wait for the photo to be taken! He started stretching his hand to return the camera to us even before the camera flashed! Aka - he couldn´t be bothered about taking a decent photo at all!

Lastly, the best part. The bill came and they happily charged us for the lamb curry! When we told the waiter that we didn´t order it, he scolded us in German again and insisted that we had before reluctantly cancelling the order with a pen. That was when I decided that was it and argued back at him in German that we didn´t order it and he better not blame us for something that we didn´t do. That was when he shut up. We kept waiting for him to come back so that we could pay the bill but he never came back and we ended up walking straight to the cashier to pay the bill. I filled up a feedback form and passed it to another waiter at the cashier - to which he didn´t even bother to be friendly and polite, but simply slammed my feedback form to the table and didn´t even bother to say thanks or bye, but just ignored me.

I wish I can say that I will never go back to this restaurant ever again. Who cares about good food when one is treated like crap?! But Stuttgart being Stuttgart, where good Asian food is hard to come by, this restaurant really does have very good food. I shall simply boycott it till May and go back to Singapore and eat all my Asian food for one whole year and see how long I can make do without Indian food. I´m even willing to go to other not-so-gd Indian restaurants and give my business to others who deserve it better than this one. Ganesha has never been known for good service, but today was a record low!

Dearest Pris,

that posting kind of made me smile (although I totally understand your anger, don't get me wrong!). You shouldn't stay away from the restaurant though just because of this one waiter. Especially if they have really good food. Go back there and maybe change tables in order to be served by someone else next time and I'm sure you will be fine. ;)

When I was working as a waitress I had a lot of customers that did my head in (i.e. 3 girls sharing one sandwich and one bottle of the cheapest wine - then asking for the bill to be split three ways on three different credit cards and no one leaving a tip although it was madly busy) and I'm sure that a lot of customers hated me for my attitude (yep, definitely had it then, certainly still having it now at times). Am sure he was just not a happy person that day which shouldn't put you off.

Go back and enjoy the good food!! :)

Miss you so much and I hope that God will be watching over you while you are going through a lot of difficult changes in your life.

All my love,

jie jie

P.S.: We have a temp secretary on at the moment and she speaks both Kantonese and Mandarin. She saw my little post-it with 'jie jie' and 'mei mei' on (because I still mix them up) and wants to teach me Mandarin now! ;)

Thanks so much for your timely and wise advice! We´ll definitely go back to eat at some pt in the future. I agree with you that the waiter was simply having a bad day and we happened to the people that he took out his frustrations on.

Anyways, I´m quite over it now, though I do think abt it every now and then. I guess I need to forgive the waiter for ruining what I wanted to be a perfect evening with my dad and his gf. We had a superb time in Switzerland btw! Have lotsa photos but need to wait b4 I upload them.

Heard from mom that you had a difficult 1-week training course but you made it thru just great! WELL DONE! SO proud of you! You´re a bright girl, I´m sure you´ll figure out stuff in the bank in no time! For now, I guess the climb up Mt Everest is still steep, but one step at a time! That´s what I tell myself too!

Oh heehee, we cld exchange mandarin the next time you come back, if you do learn some words from the new secretary!

Take care and God bless u too!
Love, mei mei
